Personally, I have learned that stripping the skin of all its natural oils in an effort to “cleanse” the skin is actually a misconception that contributes to many skin problems. In order to retain skin’s natural pH balance and moisture, there is only one way to wash. Even expensive department store brands are not necessarily good for your skin; so the best washes to use are those that contain sensitive skin ingredients such as olive oil, sorbitol, or glycerin.

The only way skin can really protect itself is to make use of its natural moisture and oils; common cleansers that use sodium laurel sulfates or salicylic acid as the main ingredient are definitely stripping your skin of its own oils.

Because the stripping action produces more dead skin cells, they will begin to act as a barrier to any moisturizers you use; even the most expensive and potentially effective moisturizers will not be able to adequately rehydrate your skin when faced with this wall of buildup. The layers of skin that can use the moisture to rehydrate and renew your skin cells will never actually be properly effected by the moisturizer. This is even worse than if you had not cleansed your skin in the first place!

Always be sure to check the list of ingredients on any so-called sensitive cleanser product to make sure you are not wasting your money. To eliminate dry, irritated skin, look for natural sensitive skin cleanser products that work with your skin’s natural oils.

Where’d You Get Those Georgeous Lashes?

By now, most everyone has heard of the new eyelash growth treatment available only through a prescription. Allergan claims that their product, Latisse, will grow lashes 25 percent longer, 106 percent thicker and 18 percent darker after 16 weeks of use.

Oh and by the way, there is a name for the condition as they are requiring prescriptions. It’s called hypotrichosis and obviously we all have it. Remember when we all found out we had restless leg syndrome?

Does it really encourage eyelash growth? Does it turn your eyes a different color? Does it darken your eyelids? And are the results permanent? Yes, no, maybe, and no based on what I have read on the website. According to one user, after about 8 weeks, you will notice that your longest lashes will begin the shedding process and new lashes have begun growing underneath. Ok, makes sense. There must be a cut off point for how many lashes can grow on your eyelid!

And according to the Latisse website, eyelashes are expected to return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months after discontinued use. So, to keep these luscious eyelashes, you must continue using the product and at a $130 average price point along with the prescription this seems to be an expensive proposition. Consumer Reports has a great video Longer Lashes but At Real Risk about Latisse side effects and costs.

Latisse is not the only eyelash growth product on the market however.

There is also Revitalash Eyelash Conditioner, $150 for a 6 month supply, which has been around for some time. It was created by ophthalmologist, Michael Brinkenhoff, MD, for his wife who was recovering from breast cancer in order to give her eyelashes renewed vitality and beauty. It can be found in more than 5,000 premium spas, salons, and physician’s offices across the country and around the world and can now be ordered on line.

Not advertised as an eyelash growth product but a conditioner that revitalizes dry, brittle, sparse eyelashes. This product was on the market long before Latisse came into the picture and I have to wonder if it basically does the same thing only now the big pharma have their hands on it.

On to Rapid Lash Eye Renewal System. For $33, a lash product that helps thicken eyelashes and brows.  Said to thicken the appearance of and improve the condition of your lashes and brows. This was the first eyelash growth product I tried and I was extremely pleased with the results. Will you have results like users of Latisse claiming that their eyelashes now touch their eyebrows? I doubt it and I have to say that must certainly look ridiculous?
