Just about every cosmetic company is jumping on the mineral makeup bandwagon and for good reason. It leaves skin with a soft, natural feel and long lasting glow. It lessens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It helps to conceal blemishes, scars, sun damage, acne, rosacea and skin discoloration. And it is all natural.
Unfortunately, you won’t find the best mineral makeup at your local Walmart or drugstore. Large companies are designed for profit and tend to pad their products with unnatural and inexpensive fillers. Of course, they need this extra dough to pay for expensive advertising and expensive packaging….who can blame them?
Many mineral makeup brands on the market today are not natural as they are counting on you to assume. The following is a list of commonly used ingredients NOT found in the best mineral makeup on the market today.
Bismuth (bismuth oxychloride): heavy mineral and pearlizing ingredient used as an inexpensive filler allowing the makeup to look “prettier“. A by-product of lead and copper mixes with chloride. Clogs pours and skin irritant. Do not use if you have acne or rosacea.
Fragrance: an irritant, may trigger headaches, asthma.
Talc: cheap filler closely related to the carcinogen asbestos. May be linked to tumors in the overies and endometriosis.
and the big “P”…..
Parabens: used in millions of cosmetic products; methylparaben, polpylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, benzylparaben. They are toxic chemicals that seeps into tissues. Parabens have been linked to cancer.
The drugstore brands…..
Almay Pure Blends Mineral Makeup Powder has methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and alumina in it’s ingredient list.
Cover Girl Tru-blend Minerals Pressed Mineral Foundation lists methylparaben and propylparaben in the list of ingredients.
Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Mineral Powder Foundation: methylparaben, tocopheryl acetate and propylparaben.
Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc Free Mineral Foundation (note the talc free gimick). Talc free, but uses methylparaben, PEG-32, propylparaben, butylparaben. Buyer beware.
Revlon Colorstay Mineral Foundation lists methylparaben, polyethylene, and propylparaben.
Now for the good stuff…the best mineral makeup with no oils, talc, perfume, bismuth and no parabens. These products are oftentimes sold for less than department and drugstore brands. No big television ads and no fancy packaging for these companies. The following products do not contain parabens, talc, perfume, and other common irritants and they are all signers of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics.
