What can one say about mineral foundation makeup? At its best, it will do things for your skin that no other makeup can do. Because it doesn’t use artificial ingredients, dyes, or perfumes, it’s much better for skin, and it also doesn’t cake or crease like most makeups do. Sheer coverage that illuminates skin with light reflecting minerals while still retaining the look of healthy, bare, natural skin.

How can minerals be makeup, you’re asking?

Well, the types of minerals used are:

Mica powder.
Mica powder is an off-white inorganic pigment powder and specialty filler. It is used in foundation, eye shadow and blush, soap and so on. It is a natural alternative to products like Bismuth Oxychloride – an ingredient to which many people are allergic.

Titanium dioxide.
Titanium dioxide, a white, odorless powder pigment, has a crystalline structure and thus a high refractive index. It’s also water resistant, which is why it is used in mineral foundation makeup.

Zinc oxide.
Zinc oxide is produced from naturally occurring zinc ore, and is an odorless fine white powder with a the tiniest of particle sizes. It provides UV protection, is insoluble but dispersible in water and oils. Many makeups and other products use this ingredient, not must mineral makeups. Indeed, most makeups use these minerals – what’s different is that other companies also add a lot more, unneeded stuff – dyes and perfumes and so on.

Serecite mica.
Serecite is a  low luster odorless powder which provides a fine shimmer and low luster effects. This is used as a base powder in foundations, blushes, shadows or any product which is supposed to have a matte effect.

Magnesium stearate.
Magnesium stearate is formed from ester of magnesium and stearic acid (magnesium is a naturally occurring metal, stearic acid is derived from vegetable oil. (At least, that’s what some sources say. Others say it’s a by product of the slaughter houses!). Wherever it comes from, it’s a viscosity enhancer, an emulsifier, and improves the adhesiveness of powders to the skin.
