Even the simplest skincare routine needs an effective cleanser. Makeup, dead skin cells, sebum and just the daily dust and grime all accumulate on our skin during the day. With green cleansing, you get rid of this guck using products without harsh detergents, preservatives, fragrance or enhancers.
There are several chemicals to avoid in our daily beauty products and most cleansers are not an exception. Many non-foaming cleansers contain mineral oil, a hormone disrupting stearic acid and drying propylene glycol. Foaming cleansers rely on sodium laureth sulfate to create the suds that we have been conditioned to associate with clean.
Forget the skin typing marketing ploy. Pay attention to your skin’s need, experiment a little and choose a cleansing method which works for you. If you are starting your natural beauty journey or just looking for a change, try any of the methods below to clean and nourish your skin.
Try a natural oil cleansing method. Cleaning your face with oil might seem counter productive. Surely adding oil to your face will make you break out? Nope. Oil cleansers are gentler to the skin and will not aggravate acne. Like dissolves like and since most of the grime that collects on your face during the day is oil based (makeup, sebum etc), oil will help loosen this dirt. Always use high quality oils which are organic and cold pressed. There are a number of oils to choose from. If your skin is feeling dry, try avocado or apricot kernel oil. Jojoba oil is a great for all skin types as well as sweet almond and grapeseed oil. Add a few drops of something special like argan oil or peppermint and rose essential oils. Experiment with different oils and combinations and find the best one for your skin.
Oil cleansing is simple. First, rinse your face with warm water. Then, massage a small amount of oil onto your skin with a circular motion and upward strokes around your neck. Be extra gentle around your eyes. Soak your washcloth in warm or hot water and lay on your face. Leave it for about 20 seconds, then wipe the oil away.
The double cleansing method adds an additional step. Massage a cleansing cream, gel, oil or organic plant bar soap into your skin after your oil cleansing. Splash your skin with cool water to close pores.
Both methods will leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized.
Make your own cleansers. You can tailor the formulations to your needs. Most recipes require only three or four ingredients and a few minutes to complete. If you want a foaming cleanser, start with water and a liquid castile soap base. Then add your favorite natural oils like jojoba or sweet almond oil Add a few drop of essential oils such as lavender and rosemary or tea tree oil if you are acne prone. Place in a foaming dispenser and start cleansing. Experiment with other ingredients like raw honey and aloe vera gel to help calm the skin.
If you are not interested in making your own products, there are several natural products you can online and in stores. Look for brands like Trevarno, NUXE and Bareskin Beauty.
