Repair Sun Damage In As Little As 12 Weeks

Most of us have some sort of sun damage mainly because our parents had no idea what sunscreen was when we were growing up. Heck, my sisters and I fought over the hump in the back seat of the car, and my mother breast fed with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth. We’ve come a long way over the years and while we didn’t have control then, we certainly have control now.

Sun damaged skin is not pretty. The more you expose your skin to the sun, the more collagen and elastin break down, kicking in a response mechanism to protect itself, making the skin thicker for regeneration. You’ve all seen those with age spots or sun spots and even skin that looks leathery and it isn’t attractive. If you have age spots and you are not using good quality skin care products and you continue to expose your skin to the sun, these age spots will get bigger and bigger. I have seen, in my own family, age spots the size of a cheek. (more…)

Best Anti Aging Creams I Will Never Buy

The spring issue of New Beauty Magazine had its Beauty Choice Awards for best anti aging creams and I have to say that I am shocked at the price of these face creams.

The best overall luxury cream:

La Mer Concentrate for $350. Why? It hydrates, and makes skin feel smooth. (That’s it?) Made with Miracle Broth? What in the world could be in this miracle broth?

The best anti aging cream over $500:

La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare for $1000. Why? It tackles just about every anti aging concern. (So do many natural skin products) Made with platinum; huh?

The best skin care system over $500:

Orlane Global Anti Aging Ampoules for $750. Why? It greatly improves texture and tone. (That’s it?) Made with SIRT Complex; never heard of it.

I can almost bet that your skin will look just as great with a natural anti aging cream that costs under a hundred bucks!

Another Report-Another Reason To Use Natural Skin Products

Once again, a report has surfaced regarding toxic ingredients in skin care products. While this time, it is a short list, the key ingredient is mineral oil. Mineral oil is found in hundreds of products, so keep an eye on the ingredients list especially this summer when choosing a tanning oil and stick with a natural skin cream if possible

Mineral oil is actually a derivative of petroleum, the same stuff you put in your car’s engine. Because it’s very viscous (slippery), many products use mineral oil as the main ingredient, as it allows the lotion to be spread easily across your skin. This despite the fact that it’s a known carcinogen! I will say this again, why take a chance when there are so many natural skin products on the market today?

This Popular Moisturizer Applied to Mice for 17 Weeks Got 69% More Tumors

A study has found that topical applications of moisturizers such as Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream, or Vanicream could increase skin cancer risk.

Irradiated mice who were treated with the moisturizers exhibited a significant increase in their rate of tumor formation and increase in tumor size per mouse. Treatment of the mice with Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin, or Vanicream for 17 weeks increased the total number of histologically characterized tumors by 69 percent.

According to the study, as reported by Green Med Info:

“The results indicate that several commercially available moisturizing creams increase the rate of formation and number of tumors when applied topically to UVB-pretreated high-risk mice. Further studies are needed to determine the effects of topical applications of moisturizing creams … in humans.” (more…)

The Best Night Cream-Not Sold At Your Local Pharmacy

First of all, in order to find the best night cream, you must look to natural. In my opinion, natural skin products will eliminate your skin problems once and for all and a natural night cream is no exception. The right products without chemicals are key to a good anti aging regimen. The right natural ingredients will work in harmony with your skin, repairing it while you sleep.

Many chemicals in skin care products are not only known carcinogens, these chemicals will only sit on your skin, clogging pores, causing irritation, and more than likely making your skin problems worse. In this post, I will be revealing 10 of the best night creams I have found from either personal experience or through my own research.

These night creams are not found in your local pharmacy store nor will they ever be. More than likely, you have never heard of them and I love bringing them to your attention. You will thank me for this later when your skin is transformed from dull and lifeless to healthy and glowing. (more…)

Coconut Oil For Skin

I am nuts for coconuts! Hee hee, just had to throw that in there. There is nothing like the smell of coconut oil in the summertime. I have used both coconut oil and almond oil in the summers to get glowing skin on top of my tan. Nothing can beat it. It’s cheap, it deeply hydrates and as I mentioned before, it smells incredible, something like, well summer!

Coconut Oil For Skin

Coconut is full of nutrients that can boost your health. Adding coconut water to your daily diet for example may help regulate blood sugar because of its high potassium content. It has been compared to sports drinks for its rehydrating properties and it deeply hydrates your body which will keep your skin soft, moist and healthy.

Coconut water also stimulates healthy digestion and improves circulation. This is beneficial to skin as circulation encourages new cell growth and an increase in circulation can give you healthy, glowing skin along with natural exfoliation every day. Nobody wants dull skin and coconut water will help produce new healthy skin cells on a daily basis.

But wait, there’s more…

Coconut oil is a natural skin care oil that moisturizers the skin and can even heal dry, damaged skin. It contains antioxidants that neutralize free radical damage, reducing the amount of future wrinkles.

As you know, I am a big advocate of natural skin products and you really can’t get more natural than coconut oil. Watch the ingredients list. Where can you buy pure natural coconut oil? You may have to hit a health food store or vitamin shop. Nothing else will do.

It’s clear that coconut provides major health benefits to skin internally, by stimulating circulation to promote healthy skin cells and externally by moisturizing the skin and protecting it from free radical damage.

Healthy skin begins with your diet, and coconut can improve your skin both inside and out.

Permanent Hair Straightening-Still Not Safe

Everyone thinks that because a service or product is offered at a salon, it is safe. Unfortunately, this is completely false and the FDA seems to disappoint once again, this time in the case of dangerous hair straightening products. A recent Environmental Working Group report claims that hair straightener makers and salons continue to cover up the dangers exposing their clients and salon workers to formaldehyde.

EWG Investigation: Hair Straighteners Release Potent Carcinogen

Obama Administration Moves to Curb Toxic Salon Service

CONTACT: EWG Public Affairs: 202.667.6982. alex@ewg.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 12, 2011

Washington, D.C. – The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a health hazard alert to salons nationwide about the risks that popular hair straightening products, including well-known Brazilian Blowout, pose a danger to salon workers and customers. The agency warned that formaldehyde – a common ingredient in many of the treatments – can cause nose and lung irritation and increases the risk of cancer. Read more….

EWG’s comprehensive report of 45 manufacturers of hair-straightening products has found that:

  • Even though companies are claiming that they do not use formaldehyde in their products, tests show that 15 out of 16 of these companies have a substantial amount of formaldehyde in their products.
  • Dangerous formaldehyde fumes have been found in the air of salons; those salons using hair straightening products containing more than 1 percent formaldehyde are required by law to monitor workers symptoms. Some products tested contain 11.8 percent!
  • Unfortunately, many salons continue to deny the risks and government officials have been slow to move against risky hair straighteners.

From the EWG report:

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has belatedly issued a “hazard alert” to salon workers and owners, urging them to stop using formaldehyde-based hair straighteners. If they persisted in selling the service, the agency said, they must take extensive precautions, including air monitoring, installing ventilation, training workers and providing protective equipment such as gloves, chemical splash goggles, face shields and chemical resistant aprons.

The agency disclosed that it is investigating a number of salons, importers, distributors and manufacturers of these products and already has issued some citations. “Workers have the right to know the risks associated with the chemicals with which they work, and how to protect themselves,” OSHA chief David Michaels said on April 11, 2011, as he announced the agency’s salon crack-down. “Employers need to know these risks in order to ensure the safety and health of their workers.

The FDA, responsible for cosmetic safety, does not limit amounts of formaldehyde in hair-straightening products and has not taken action against companies using formaldehyde. Hair straighteners based on formaldehyde have been recalled in six countries — Australia, Ireland, Canada, France, Germany and Cyprus — but are still widely used in American salons.

What is even more frightening is that most consumers are unaware of the dangers to begin with….or maybe they just don’t want to know for fear that they would have to give up straight hair. EWG goes even further in its report, listing the best options for straight hair. Unfortunately, there aren’t many.

Safe Skin Whitening Around The Corner?

Could there be a safe skin whitening alternative around the corner? I sure hope so as I am well aware of the damage women are inflicting on the health of their skin by using dangerous skin lightening products to whiten skin. It is not worth it to me but then again exposing our fair skin to too much sun for the perfect tan is a pretty close second, doing some heavy duty damage, mainly wrinkles and skin cancer. Who am I to judge?

From Science Daily:

Safer, More Effective Skin Whitening Creams from Ancient Chinese Herbal Medicine

Science Daily (Mar. 30, 2011) — Scientists have reported discovery of the active ingredients in an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine for skin whitening, changing skin color to a lighter shade. The ingredients are poised for clinical trials as a safer, more effective alternative to skin whitening creams and lotions that millions of women and some men use in Asia and elsewhere, they said. The report was among more than 9,500 presentations the week of March 28 at the 241st National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

The finding, which caps an intense search for these natural skin lightening substances, could be a boon to women in Asian countries, said study leader Hui-Min Wang, Ph.D. He explained that skin whitening products are all the rage there, but too-often accompanied by itching, redness, inflammation, and other side effects.

“Toxic skin whitening creams are a growing threat to women’s health, especially in Asia,” Wang said. We hope that our product will improve lives and provide a safer, more natural way to lighten skin. A cream based on these herbal ingredients could be available on store shelves in as little as a year.” Read more..
