Easy Skin Care Routine

Over the holidays, I took a job at Origins for extra Christmas money (unfortunately I spent it all there). Even though I already had knowledge of the natural skin care industry and hundreds of natural skin products, I learned quite a bit about how clients feel about taking care of the skin that they will live with for the rest of their lives when given an easy skin care routine. Like anything else, there are those who care and those who don’t.

I personally think that “those who don’t” are either lazy or think that it’s too expensive to spend the money on skin care products. It’s crazy. These are the same people that will go out and buy tons of “stuff” to decorate their houses and buy expensive cars to look good to their neighbors, but wait, “spend money on my face?.”

They eventually live to regret it……….

I saw this first hand, every single day that I worked there.

Those that “do care” sometimes get carried away and become skin care junkies. (BTW, if you are one of these people, it is in your best interest to be a natural skin care junkie.) I can’t tell you how many clients I had to tell to let off on some of the products because they didn’t need them, for real. If you are using the right products, and by that I mean natural, than you only need a few products for healthy, glowing skin as part of an easy skin care routine.

An easy skin care routine, for a beginner is this:

  • Exfoliate-exfoliating your skin once or twice a week will get rid of the dead skin cells sitting on top of your skin and reveal new, glowing skin underneath. Again a natural exfoliator is best as it is gentler on your skin.
  • Cleanse-leaving your makeup on to go to bed will clog pores and allow chemicals, if you use products with chemicals, to remain there through the evening. Use a natural cleanser morning and night.
  • Moisturize– even the best natural moisturizers can’t always eliminate wrinkles and aging, however when your skin is moisturized, not only does it have a life as in glow, but it also softens those wrinkles so that they are not as pronounced. You will instantly look 10 years younger.

That’s it! When you are addicted to the new natural skin products you started using, you will want to add the following:

  • Natural eye cream– made specifically for the tender area surrounding the eyes, if you don’t already use one, you may see a dramatic improvement in the look of wrinkles under and on the sides of your eyes within a few short weeks
  • Natural facial mask– using a natural face mask once a week can do wonders for irritated skin. Choose the right one for the problems that you are experiencing. There is a natural face mask for dry skin, for oily and acne prone skin and for normal skin. You can even resort to a homemade facial mask if you are short on cash.

Get started with this easy skin care routine and add products when you can afford to. What you can’t afford not to do is purchase a good, all natural cleanser and an all natural moisturizer. Not using these important skin care products will most definitely age your skin at least 10 years……….and don’t even try to tell me you have great skin and don’t use anything.

I have had many of those clients too and I am not sure what they see in the mirror, but it is not radiant, glowing skin.

Homemade Facial Masks

As more and more people realize the benefits of all natural skin products, many are turning to homemade skin care. Why not? Your skin can only benefit from ingredients found in nature and even in your kitchen. No chemicals, no preservatives, just pure heaven. Here are some homemade facial masks that will moisturize, soften and invigorate your skin.

Homemade facial masks with Mango

Yes, mango is an amazing fruit, one that contains lots of vitamins, potassium, calcium, magnesium and is loaded with fiber. Mangoes also contain flavonoids that help to strengthen the immune system, antioxidants that may help prevent heart disease and some cancers. The benefits of mangoes goes on and on.

The best part is that mangos are great for sensitive skin, healing chapped skin, relieving skin irritations and protecting skin from the assaults of the environment. I won’t even get into mango benefits for your hair. Here’s how to make a facial mask with mango:

Use 2 tbls of chopped mango pulp, 1 tbls of honey and 1 tls of almond oil. Just mix it together, apply to face and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Avocado Facial Mask

A homemade facial mask that contains avocados with oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that may help lower cholesterol. Potassium, folate, and catanoid lutein are all terrific for your health, but it’s the significant amount of vitamin E that gets our attention when trying to repair skin.

Combine 1 mashed avocado with 1 cooked and mashed carrot, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1 egg, beaten and 3 tbls of honey. Leave on face for 15 minutes and rinse with cool water. With regular use, this natural face mask can help rebuild collagen, improve skin tone and fade age spots.

Clarifying Face Mask

This homemade face mask, courtesy of Spa Magazine, uses bentonite, a mineral rich clay that will draw out impurities and jojoba oil which dissolves sebum in pores. This is the mask for you if you suffer from oily skin and recurring breakouts.

Combine 2 tbls of bentonite clay (check your health food store), 1 tbls apple cider vinegar, and 1 tsp jojabo oil in a blender. Apply to face, leave on for 20, and wash off with lukewarm water.

Exfoliating Mask

Milk powder contains lactic acid which gently exfoliates your skin, eliminating dead skin cells and revealing soft glowing skin. Combine 1 Tbls milk powder, 1 Tbls honey, and 1 egg yolk, apply to face and rinse off after 20 minutes.

Strawberry Mask

If the smell of strawberries gives you a lift , this homemade facial mask will be the highlight of your day. All it takes is a 1/2 cup of strawberries and 1 tbls of yogurt. Add mashed strawberries to the yogurt, smooth over skin and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and watch your acne subside.

This homemade facial mask has all the benefits of an expensive facial at your local spa:

Combine ½ teaspoon manuka honey, ½ teaspoon aloe vera gel, ½ teaspoon cold-pressed organic coconut oil, and ½ teaspoon raw cacao powder in a medium-size bowl until a loose paste forms. Cleanse your face and place a hot towel over your skin for a few minutes to open your pores. Apply and lightly massage it in until the mask feels sticky. Leave the mask on your face for 5-10.

Manuka honey is jam-packed with vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants. It helps keep your skin radiant and firm. It also has antibacterial properties to help heal blemishes. Aloe provides moisture and helps restore damaged skin. It nourishes and moisturizes your skin. Make sure to get the edible aloe vera gel from your local health-food store.

Coconut oil is a rich, natural source of one of the most important lipid soluble antioxidants – Vitamin E. It moisturizes, nourishes and protects your skin. Use unrefined coconut oil and cocao powder supplies your skin with hundreds of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. What’s more, it nourishes and exfoliates your skin.

Salma Hayek’s New Beauty Line-The Secret To Reducing Wrinkles?

Here’s a shocker; another big star launching her own skin care products. Just what we need…more skin care products to confuse all of us.

From InStyle:

Mar 1, 2011 @ 11:04 am

Salma Hayek first mentioned plans to create a mass-market beauty collection two years ago, and now it’s finally coming true! The actress announced plans to launch her first beauty line named Nuance for CVS next year. “I always wanted to do this,” she told T Magazine, adding that she’s been working on it for seven years.

Her driving source of inspiration: Her grandmother, a former cosmetologist who used to make her own products. “My grandmother, who was a beauty, she died at 96 with no wrinkles,” Hayek said. “And you should see my mother! We have some family secrets.” The lineup will include body gel, a brow kit, and facial cream cleanser, among other items.

Here’s where the confusion comes in:

Her grandmother made her own skin care products so of course she had beautiful skin. Salma, however is teaming up with CVS and will “mass-market” her family’s beauty secrets.

Ok, Salma, how will you mass market these beauty products without the nasty chemicals and preservatives that your grandmother never used to make her own products?

Amazing Natural Eyelash Enhancements

With the hundreds of eyelash enhancements on the market today including eyelash growth products, eyelash conditioners and great mascaras that enhance lashes, if you have them, there is absolutely no reason why they should not be big, bold and beautiful. Truly.

I watch my daughter and her friends do their makeup and they all have these amazing eyelashes. Every single one of them. The only thing they use is mascara! Those were the days, and then again, to get the eyelashes that I am talking about we would have had to use false ones and I don’t think most of us cared because the hot girl in high school didn’t have eyelash enhancements either. Ok, so moving on…..

Here are two of my favorite natural eyelash enhancements:

LashFood Natural Eyelash Conditioner

This natural eyelash enhancer uses peptides, natural plant extracts and soy protein to assist in promoting healthy eyelash growth. You can also use it for overplucked eyebrows.

Made with all natural herb extracts, LashFood provides thicker, darker, longer eyelashes with all natural ingredients. This eyelash enhancer will transform your tiny, frail and brittle lashes so that they become healthy and strong. Biotin, Arginine and Iris extract promote the natural growth of healthy eyelashes.

La Bella Donna Enriched Lash Enhancement

This all natural eyelash enhancer increases the length and thickness of lashes without harmful chemicals. Goes on like eyeliner and nourishes the bulb of the lashes. Made with botanical extracts, marine extracts, and antioxidant vitamins, La Bella Donna Enriched Lash Enhancement promotes lash growth and life to give you gorgeous thick lashes. You won’t ever have to worry about any danger to the eyes with this product.

Spray Tan Tips

Because of my near experience with skin cancer I swore off the tanning booth. As my March vacation approached, I began to panic about well…not having a tan. How would I wear shorts? How would I wear that awesome white top? How could I possibly wear my bikini? I know, I will get one of those spray tans! Well, needless to say, I learned a lot from my experience and here are my spray tan tips:

Tip #1

Don’t waste your money on spray tans.

The spray tan cost is too high for the quality of the tan. I paid $25 for the first spray tan and never got any color to speak of. So the second time, 4 days later, having no choice….”OMG, I leave for vacation tomorrow!”, I purchased a second spray tan and added the extra $5 for the “bronze” look. While I obtained a slight color on my upper body, my legs were still pasty white. So guess what I had to do to wear shorts the very next day? I had to use my sisters good old trusty self tanning towels.

Tip #2

Don’t waste your money on spray tans.

I am not sure if I am just too old to hold my breath for very long, but I just couldn’t hold it long enough for the spray tan to complete the process and therefore inhaled it. Nasty! Can you say chemicals?

Tip #3

Don’t waste your money on spray tans.

I guess I am also too old to listen to directions. Everything ok facing front; you can leave your arms by your side. The problem comes in when you turn around. You must remember to put your arms in front of you or you will tan the inside of your arms. Unfortunately for me, the inside of my arms got a nice tan.

Tip #4

Don’t waste your money on spray tans.

Don’t you hate the smell of self tanning lotions? I sure do. It takes hours and definitely a shower to eliminate that nasty smell. Use the spray tan booth and be prepared to smell “the smell” for days, not hours. You can take many showers over several days and as soon as you start to sweat, you will smell that lovely smell. Again, can you say chemicals? Obviously they seep into your pores.

I know, we are lazy and just don’t want to go through the trouble of rubbing self tanner all over our bodies, but the expense is not worth it. You get a slight color, chemicals up your nose and in your lungs, and smell for days on end. Thanks to my sis, I will be stocking up on self tanning towels at Simply Karen. Here’s why:

  • No Mess
  • No streaks.
  • No discolored ankles, knees or elbows.
  • No exfoliating first.
  • Dries in seconds.
  • Gives even coverage.
  • Convenient for travel.

And best of all…you will smell good after applying it! Yes, there is a self tanner that actually makes you smell good. It’ true!

Try a self tanning towel for free!
